The Transfiguration of the Lord
August 19
Feast of the Unsetting Light
Today the abyss of inaccessible Light (is poured out)!
Today, the boundless outpouring of Divine splendor on Mount Tabor shone upon the Apostles! Today, the Lord Jesus Christ of the Old and New Testaments is made known, a Person and Name dear to me, truly the sweetest and most desirable and surpassing every concept of sweetness. Today, the head of the Old (Testament) Moses, the divine lawgiver, stands on Mount Tabor before Christ the Lawgiver as the Ruler and is illuminated by His dispensation (of humanity), into which he was prefigured in ancient times, for this, I would say, is signified by the “back of God” (Exodus 33:23) and he clearly sees the glory of the Divinity covered by the cleft of the rock, as the (Holy) Scripture says (Exodus 33:22-23). And the Rock is Christ, the incarnate God the Logos and Lord, as the divine Paul clearly taught us, saying: “And the Rock was Christ” (1 Cor. 10:4), who, like a tiny opening, opened His body and illuminated the present with a light abundant and stronger than any other. (Venerable John of Damascus)
The Feast of the Transfiguration of our Lord Jesus Christ is one of the twelve great feasts of the Lord in the dispensation of our salvation. This feast is thematically connected with all those saving events from the Savior's life that occurred immediately before His suffering and glorious Resurrection. In order to reveal His Divine power and glory to the apostles in a visible and experienced way before His suffering, Christ took the Apostles Peter, James, and John to the high Mount Tabor and was Transfigured before them, showing them His Divine glory and power. He did not take all the apostles, but only the three most beloved, because He knew that Judas would betray Him, and therefore was not worthy to see the Divine glory of Christ, and yet He did not want to leave Him alone at the foot of the mountain, so that He would later justify His betrayal by doing so. According to the Gospel accounts, at the moment of the Transfiguration, the Savior's face shone like the sun, and His garments became white as light. The Gospel accounts also testify to the appearance of the Old Testament prophets Moses and Elijah at the time of Christ's Transfiguration.
The Transfiguration of the Lord
Troparion
You were transfigured on the mountain, Christ God, showing Your disciples Your glory, as much as they could bear. May Your eternal light shine upon us sinners, through the prayers of the Most Holy Theotokos, Giver of Light, glory to You!
Kontakion
On the mountain You were transfigured, and as much as they could bear, the disciples saw Your divine glory, O Christ God, so that when they saw You crucified, they understood Your voluntary suffering, and they preached to the world that You are truly the Light of the Father.
Prayer of the Transfiguration of the Lord
Heavenly, beginningless and unfading Light, who hast from the self-existent and eternal Father of light a timeless and divine essence, as true God from true God, in the radiance of the Consubstantial Trinity unmingled and indivisible, the only Source of all light that exists in the world, the Wonderful Maker, who oversaw the creation of all creation! In addition to the fact that You sealed the intellectual and verbal creation with Your image, in recent times You descended from heaven to earth for the sake of the embodiment of this darkened image of Yours and took on the form of an earthen one, that by the hypostatic unity of the dual nature in Yourself You might enlighten the darkened one, purify and transform the perishable, and make what was bound by death new in birth in You for eternal existence, O Most Merciful, All-Wise and Almighty our Savior, Lord Jesus Christ! Therefore, on Tabor, before Your divinely called witnesses, You shone forth in the flesh, to show both Your God-like becoming man, although in the form of a servant, and Your all-powerful and life-giving resurrection, although it was preceded by mockery and death, and then Your most glorious ascension in the body to the upper world, from where Your even more glorious second coming will take place. By this, You again show both the first God-like light of our humble nature and its gracious transformation in You, for our sake, as the beginning and pledge of the imperishable glory prepared for us in the age to come in the Kingdom of the Heavenly Father. You came to give it to us, not attracting us by force and force, but calling us with good will and enlightened knowledge, as it was in the first paradise of delights. Therefore, receiving all this with faith and confessing with our mouths, we pray and beseech You before the face of Your glory, our Savior, who was transformed for our sake: may all Your saving gifts not be in vain for us, enlighten our minds with the understanding of Your Holy Gospel, that we may be transformed by the renewal of our minds until finally Your mind, O Christ, dwells within us, that we may no longer think what is human, but what is divine. Build a pure heart in us, O God, that we may see You more clearly, our true God, and by the life-giving light of Your countenance draw to Yourself our godless will, just as the flowers of the earth turn to the light of the sun according to the law of Your will: You yourself live and work in us, that, having cast off the old man and put on the new, we may begin to walk in renewed life, while our inner man is renewed day by day, beholding Your glory in the revealed face, that we may be transformed into that same image, from glory to glory, until we all together and each of us attain to the perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. And finally, You have been pleased to form man from the intellectual soul and body, so that the body may serve the rational soul. Transform, therefore, our humble body also, so that it may be in accordance with the Body of Your glory; Heal him from passion and weakness, strengthen his natural weakness, protect him from the destructive effects of the elements: most of all, in the closest union with You in the Most Holy Eucharist, transform him from earthly to heavenly, from soul to spiritual, that we may truly be flesh of Your Body and bones of Your Bones. Thus, having glorified God in our bodies and souls on this earth, may we all, who have partaken of the one Bread and the Cup, be glorified together in soul and body, and make us consider ourselves members of the one Body of Your Church, which You placed on the earth like a mustard seed, which when it grows will become a great branched tree of the Kingdom of God, until it covers the whole universe. Unite us all by the unanimous confession of Your saving faith, one with another, in love for You; Help us to cultivate and preserve Your Church by Your grace, as the first-created paradise that You gave to man, and that the gates of hell may not prevail against it, until You have put all the enemies of Your Kingdom under Your feet and sit on the throne of the glory of Your Kingdom, in which we too will shine like the sun with You, enlightened here in You by transfiguration. O Lord Christ, Heavenly King! May Your Kingdom, which is not of this world, but truly rules this world, come, and may we soon see this Your Kingdom coming in power. Yes, come, Lord Jesus, and abide with us, as You promised, until the end of this age and for endless ages of ages. Amen.
Akathist in Glory to the Light-Bearing Transfiguration of Christ the Savior
A miraculous icon
Mother of God
Comforter
In honor of our Glorious Lady Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary
The icon called Consolation or the Comforter is located on Mount Athos in the Annunciation Church of the Vatopedi Monastery, which was founded during the time of Emperor Constantine the Great.
Near this monastery, in the year 395, during a violent storm, Tsarevich Arcadius, son of Theodosius the Great, fell from a ship into the sea. Those present were seized with great fear, because they thought that the young man had drowned. The ship then, with great difficulty, arrived at Mount Athos, near the place where the Vatopedi monastery is located today. Tired of the long search, the travelers accidentally found the sleeping Arcadius on a hill under a bush. Upon awakening, he himself announced his miraculous deliverance from death thanks to the intercession of the Mother of God; for this reason, Vatopedi was named Žbun – child.
Emperor Theodosius, in memory of his son's rescue, expanded this monastery and endowed it with rich gifts. Later, on the site where the Tsarevich was found, an altar of the Cathedral Church was built, for the consecration of which Arkadius himself came with Patriarch Nektarios of Constantinople.
The miraculous icon of Our Lady of Consolation is located on the wall of the choir niche, in a place dedicated to her name.
The Venerable Maximus the Greek was tonsured a monk in this monastery.
The date of celebration was February 3rd according to the new calendar, or January 21st according to the old calendar .
Prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary
in honor of Her icon
Comforters
Hope of all the ends of the earth, Most Pure Virgin Theotokos, our Comfort and Joy! Do not despise us sinners, for we trust in Your mercy. Extinguish the flame of sin and with repentance sprinkle our parched hearts; cleanse our minds from sinful thoughts. Accept the prayers that are offered to You from the soul and heart with sighs; be our Intercessor before Your Son and God and turn His wrath away from us with Your maternal prayers. Strengthen the Orthodox faith in us, breathe into us the spirit of the fear of God, the spirit of humility, patience and love; heal the wounds of the soul and body, and calm the storm of the evil attacks of the enemy; take away the burden of our sins and do not leave us to perish completely; grant us Your mercy and bestow Your holy blessing on all who stand here and pray to You; And always abide with us, granting joy and comfort, help and intercession to those who come to You, that we may all praise and glorify You, until our last breath. Amen.

Prayer to Saint Nectarios of Aegina
Prayer one
O myrrh-bearing head, Saint Nectarius, hierarch of God! In the time of great apostasy and impiety, you shone with piety and crushed the head of the arrogant Satan, who wounded us. For this reason, Christ gave you the gift of healing the incurable diseases that have befallen us because of our iniquities. We believe: God the Just loved you, that for our sake we sinners might have mercy on you, that He might free us from the curse, that He might deliver us from disease, and that His terrible and most glorious name, of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, may be glorified throughout the whole universe, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
A friend's prayer
O Saint Nektarios, God-wise father! Receive, guardian of the Orthodox faith, the confession of the mouths of the people named Christ, who have gathered today in the temple by the grace of God that lives in you. The news reaches the Serbian land that you, great among the Saints, the pleaser of God, appear in all parts of the world to those who call upon your name and grant healing from cancer to the sick. We have heard of the priest, your namesake, Nektarios, who is building a temple in your name, with great suffering, because he was seriously ill with cancer on his chest and blood flowed from his wound every day and he suffered greatly, but he did not abandon his holy work. And you, Saint of many mercy, suddenly descended from Heaven and appeared before him in the temple. He, however, thinking of you as a brother and one of the mortals, asked you to pray for him and said: "I am very sick, but I want to build a holy church, so that I can celebrate the Holy Liturgy in it at least once together with the parishioners, and then let me die, for I am not afraid of death." And you, father, although you were bodiless, wet your face with tears! And embracing the sufferer, you kissed him and said: "Do not grieve, my child, for, since you are being tested by illness, you will soon recover. And everyone will know about this miracle." The latter, however, having been healed, understood with whom he was speaking, but you had already become invisible by then. O great pleaser of Christ, Nektarios! That temple is completed today and your miracles have multiplied like the sea! We have understood that the prayers of the righteous should be supported by our zeal for the service of God and by our determination to die for Christ, in order to be healed. Your sick children, righteous father, pray to you: that the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God be fulfilled in us, for God does not desire the death of a sinner, but that a sinner turn and live. But you, the prophet of the will of God, heal us by your gracious appearance, so that great be God in heaven and on earth forever and ever! Amen.
Akathist to Saint Nectarios of Aegina
Troparion, tone 1.
Let us, the faithful, honor Nectarius, the offspring of Silivri and the guardian of Aegina, who appeared in recent times, the virtues of a sincere friend, as a divine servant of Christ: for he pours out numerous healings to those who devoutly cry out: glory to Christ who glorified you, glory to Him who gave you the grace of miracles, glory to Him who through you grants healing to all.
Kontakion, tone 8.
Let us sing with heartfelt joy the newly-bright star of Orthodoxy and the newly-created fence of the Church: for glorified by the action of the Spirit, he pours out healing and bestows grace upon those who cry out: Rejoice, Father Nektarios.

Therefore, with one mouth and one heart, we always cry out to you: Rejoice, Nectarios, hierarch of God!

Holy Prophet Moses the God-Seer
The Holy Prophet Moses the God-Seer, a great leader and lawgiver of the people of Israel. Born in Egypt around 1550 BC. For 40 years he lived in Egypt at the court of Pharaoh; for 40 years he lived as a shepherd in contemplation of God and the world; and for the last 40 years he led the people through the desert to the Promised Land, which he saw, but did not enter, because in one thing he sinned against God (Numbers 20:12).
He died at the age of 120. As a miracle worker, he was the prototype of Christ, according to St. Basil the Great. He appeared from the other world on Mount Tabor during the Transfiguration of the Lord. And according to the testimony of St. John of the Ladder, he also appeared to the monks in the Sinai Monastery.
Troparion (tone 2)
We glorify the memory of Your prophet Moses, O Lord, therefore we beseech You, save our souls.
